Our Global Village
Science and technology has turned our world into a global village. The term—global village—was coined by Marshall Mcluhan. It is used to describe the shrinking of the world as a result of the mass media. Nowadays, the mass media is able to bright events from all corners of the globe into people’s homes. Communication technologies make it possible to connect with people in other countries on the telephone and Internet. Modern transportation systems also contribute to the creation of the global village. Now astronauts can circle around the globe in eighty minutes. The moon is already within our 1 of travel, and the addition of Mars is just a 2 of time. A visit to major cities such as New York, London and Tokyo 3 that movement of people from one country and 4 to another has become commonplace.
People everywhere are gaining 5 , and this is just the beginning. Out mobility places us in 6 with people from other cultures. And when we meet, we 7 to communicate. In fact, we must communicate. This communicative 8 is called intercultural communication. It occurs whenever a message 9 is a member of one culture and a message receiver is of 10 . We may find intercultural communication difficult. Even 11 we overcome the natural barriers of language differences, we may 12 to understand and to be understood. Misunderstanding may even become the 13 rather than the exception.
In order to communicate effectively and 14 in English, we need, therefore, to become aware of the 15 between language and culture. Language is part of culture and plays an important role in it. Without language, culture would not be possible. One the other hand, language is influenced and shaped by culture; it reflects culture. In the broad sense, language is the symbolic representation of a people, and it comprises their historical backgrounds as well as their approach to life and their ways of living the thinking. It needs to be stressed here that language and culture interact, and that understanding of one requires understanding of the other.

How the United States Works Computer Operators
There are almost 100 million working people in the United States. You can imagine all the weekly tax and social security payments the government has to handle. Working people also file tax returns that must be checked. If all this work were done by hand, many workers would have to be hired to do the job. Luckily, much of this work can be processed very quickly by computer. Thousands of people do not have to be hired, for example, to go over the arithmetic on all those tax returns. Computers can be run by considerably fewer people.
The two major computer-operating jobs are those of the 16 and the console operator. Console operators usually 17 between $7,000 and $12,000 a year. They keep the computers in good 18 order. They feed the data, or information, into the computer. 19 the computer is running, the console operator solves any 20 difficulties that come up. Since more and more computers are being 21 all the time, the need for console operators is rising.
The data that the operator 22 into the computer is not exactly the material that came into the 23 . For example, your parents’ tax return is not fed into the computer as 24 of paper covered with writing. A computer cannot read 25 in that form. It is the job of the keypuncher to change the 26 into a form that the computer can understand. 27 usually earn between $6,000 and $9,000. However, many of these 28 will become outdated as computers are made that are able to read data in different 29 .
Beginning computer operators are usually trained on the job. Most 30 , including the federal government, will only train high school graduates. The working conditions of computer operators are always good. The operators work in clean, temperature-controlled areas. This temperature control is necessary because computers break down if they are exposed to dirt or if they become too hot.
Some operators are needed to work odd shifts—for example, throughout the night. That is because computers are run on a 24-hour basis.
